In Affectionate Remembrance…

on this day in 1882, Australia beat England in one of the closest matches in cricket history. it was only the ninth time the two teams had met, and the reaction of the English press (celebrating the ability of the Australian side) resulted in the series we know as The Ashes.

Australia currently holds the Ashes (having in their last meeting beaten England in five straight Tests – only the second time such a feat had occurred), but England will once again have a chance to take them back in 2009.
