a thoroughly pleasant evening…

i was lucky enough this evening to be invited to a “Whiskies of the World” seminar at the Harbour Club, hosted by Sir Jeremy Bell. sponsored by Pernod Ricard and Southern Wine & Spirits, guests were treated to seven different whiskies and an excellent selection of hors d’oeuvres.

the first Scotch of the evening was served during the “warm-up” reception, Chivas Regal 12-year-old mixed with ginger ale. not necessarily something i would drink again, but interesting. firing up his bagpipes a little after seven PM, Sir Jeremy led us down from the rooftop terrace to the second floor and the seminar proper.

during the seminar itself, guests tried six more whiskies: The Glenlivet 15 Year Old French Oak Reserve, a west Scottish coast whisky i can’t remember (Sir Jeremy can be distracting – amusing, but distracting), Chivas Regal Gold Signature 18 Year Old, Chivas Regal 25 Year Old, Jameson 12 Year Old Special Reserve and Wild Turkey Rare Breed.

sadly, the one whose name i cannot remember was the best (in my opinion). though the Chivas 25 Year Old was o.k., i really don’t think that it’s worth the $300+ price tag. honestly, i’d rather drink Johnnie Walker Green Label (and it’s “only” $50 a bottle or so). i was also less than impressed with the Wild Turkey – too much rye. Sir Jeremy pointed out that many Scotch aficionados were exploring and drinking more of the rye-heavy bourbons (because they were closer in taste to Scotch). i like my bourbon smooth, which is why i drink Maker’s Mark. if i want Scotch flavours, i’ll drink Scotch.

my own peculiar tastes aside, it was a very enjoyable evening. including the singing. and Sir Jeremy’s rendition of the Star Wars theme on the pipes.
