i’d fly in a Soyuz…

98 flights in 41 years, 4 fatalities, and the only launch vehicle to have a successful use of an LES. the last fatal flight was in 1971. of course, i’d fly in the Shuttle, too. 14 deaths in 122 missions. both systems have had two fatal missions, but space flight is inherently risky.

i think the current flap over our astronauts flying in Soyuz capsules is mostly “not invented here” syndrome, even with the two recent re-entry snafus.

quote of the day:

“You know we’re sitting on four million pounds of fuel, one nuclear weapon and a thing that has 270,000 moving parts built by the lowest bidder. Makes you feel good, doesn’t it?” – Rockhound (Steve Buscemi), Armageddon
