PC is back!

PC being performance car, not political correctness.

performance car was a staple of my periodical diet in the late 1980s and early 1990s. it was a magazine devoted to fast cars. period. its “older brother” CAR, covered the pedestrian and humdrum. you know, how many cases of nappies one could cram in the boot of a Renault 21 estate.

but performance car told us, in exacting detail, how fast the F40 really was and how much of a handful the Lotus Carlton/Omega could be at speed. you know, useful stuff.

but then came the 1990s. the car magazine market collapsed, with many titles vanishing completely (Motor comes to mind, having been swallowed whole by the venerable Autocar). performance car was folded into CAR, and much of the fun went away. the staff went off to other magazines, and the world moved on.

but now performance car has been relaunched, with a new staff and a different publisher than CAR. but whatever else, the new magazine looks correct, with nostalgia-inducing fonts and layouts. only time will tell if it is the old friend returned, or a mere pretender. here’s to hope, and happy motoring!

quote of the day:

“Supercars are supposed to run over Arthur Scargill and then run over him again for good measure. They are designed to melt ice caps, kill the poor, poison the water table, destroy the ozone layer, decimate indigenous wildlife, recapture the Falkland Islands and turn the entire third world into a huge uninhabitable desert.” – Jeremy Clarkson
