happy birthday!

to the RAF!

formed on April 1, 1918 with the amalgamation of the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service, the Royal Air Force has since served as the United Kingdom’s airborne shield through both World Wars and her sword abroad in multiple conflicts.

currently, RAF troops and pilots are deployed as part of Operation Herrick (Afghanistan) and Operation TELIC (Iraq). as our closest allies (at least since that little spat in the 18th century), i think we owe a debt of thanks to our British friends.

so, happy birthday, RAF. and thanks to all the men and women, whatever the nationality or branch of service, who are trying to make the world a safer place.

quote of the day:

“Not to have an adequate air force in the present state of the world is to compromise the foundations of national freedom and independence.” – Winston Churchill, House of Commons, 14 March 1933
