it’s Saturday…

i must have been doing car repair.

so here’s more ugly pictures of ugly fabrication!

the nasty yellowish foam is aircraft stripper. at some point in the past, this car was undercoated – after the chassis picked up a nice load of dirt and grime. i’ve been spending most of my time trying to get the nasty tarry goop off, just so i can clean the metal underneath to try and get a decent weld. in a related note: i only set the car on fire like four or five times today. emptied my halon extinguisher, too.

but in this picture you can also see where the rear of the body outrigger has been boxed in, and the chassis stub frame patched. i still need to drill drain holes in the stub frame, to replace the ones that would have been where the rust i replaced was. the curved lip visible (where the stripper is dripping) is the edge of the outer chassis tube, by the way; that would make the hole visible under it very bad from a structural standpoint.

so what i ended up doing was welding in a new end cap to the body tube, and a reinforcing plate between the body tube and stubframe. the right rear outer seat belt mount will also anchor through this plate (as i had to cut it out today as well). i dare say this section is actually a bit stronger than the original, as it’s a 2-3 layer lamination of plates instead of the slightly overlapped original structure. i also “deleted” the lightning holes in the body outrigger – just another way to let in water, if you ask me. pretty much everything i’ve done with the chassis so far has been “belt and suspenders” repairs – i figure the car weighed 4200 lbs new, what another ten or twenty pounds between friends?

quote of the day:

“Remember in elementary school you were told that in case of fire you have to line up quietly in a single file from smallest to tallest? What is the logic in that? What, do tall people burn slower?” – Warren Hutcherson
