was launched fifty years ago today, sort of making this the fiftieth “birthday” of the US space program.

built by JPL and launched by ABMA, it was a response to the Soviets’ Sputnik I, kicking off the space race.

space exploration being near and dear to my heart, i plan on posting comments and observations about this anniversary all the way up until July 29 – which is NASA‘s 50th birthday.
