farewell and goodbye…

one of my heroes died today.

Sir Edmund Hilary, KG, ONZ, KBE, the first known climber to reach the summit of Mt. Everest, was 88. a native of New Zealand, Sir Edmund was the first man to stand at both poles and the summit of Everest.

but his most important legacy will be his philanthropic work; building schools (often with his own hands) for the Sherpa people and working to preserve the ecology and natural beauty of the world’s wild places.

most important, i think, is that his inspirational stature does not end with his death. both his charitable work and legacy as a pioneering explorer will stand as long as he is remembered.

quote of the day:

“People do not decide to become extraordinary. They decide to accomplish extraordinary things.” – Sir Edmund Hilary
