happy Sputnik Day!

today is the 50th anniversary of the launch of the first man-made satellite, Sputnik-1.

and it makes me wonder, where has the future gone? even before Sputnik, we knew that man’s future was in space. popular culture was full of outer-space themed fashions and toys. the mediums of television and film had explorers and families living in space. Lost in Space, Star Trek, The Jetsons, Star Wars and Buck Rogers – all examples of where we thought we were going.

but now?

gone are the massive, twirling space stations of 2001 – instead, we’ve got a spindly International Space Station that nobody is willing to fund. our President (whom i am not a fan of) suggests we should put a man on Mars and is ridiculed. no one appears to be dreaming big dreams anymore. man no longer wants to go to the stars – just down the corner to buy a bigger SUV.

quote of the day:

“Are you sure it isn’t time for a colorful metaphor?” – Mr. Spock, Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home

It’s not just space, it’s also world peace, race relations, pretty much any big decision to be made on virtually every aspect of life. Society as a whole seems to have taken a collective decision that “it’s all too hard”, and scaled down it’s ambitions to change anything. I’ve been sitting on a blog post on this subject for a while, but I really can’t be bothered. Perhaps I’m not that different after all.
