not only did i brew beer yesterday,

but i also test-drove a smart.

i’ve been a fan of these little cars since the original launch in 1997 (crazy to think that it’s been ten years!). and now, they will finally be available (legally, non-grey market) in the US.

there has been a lot of criticism of these cars over the years – my favourite being Forbes magazine’s complaints that they are “ugly” and “too small for American roads.” well, i guess that we should all drive TopKick Pickups, then. oh, wait, they’re ugly too. i guess we should all be driving 1950’s Cadillacs. they’re big and attractive. and fuel hogs, and ungainly, and…

anyway, i think that the time has come for a car like the smart in the US market, particularly as a “second” car. they’re ideal for the urban or suburban dweller as a runabout or daily driver. and with the low price (around $15k for a nicely optioned “passion” model), it leaves more room in the wallet (and garage) for a nice “weekend car.” whether that weekend car be a sports car, or a tow vehicle for the boat, it’ll be a lot less painful filling up that tow vehicle (or sports car) that only gets 15 mpg – since the smart gets over 40…

so, it may not be the perfect car for everybody – but i think that it’s a step in the right direction.

quote of the day:

“They think they can make fuel from horse manure – Now, I don’t know if your car will be able to get 30 miles to the gallon, but it’s sure gonna put a stop to siphoning.” – Billie Holiday
