Freedom is the right of all sentient beings.

and i guess that includes the freedom to spend stupid amounts of money on eBay.

specifically, the 1977 Camaro that was used to portray Bumblebee in the new Transformers movie. it’s currently up for auction on eBay, and with three days left in the auction it’s been bid up to just over thirty thousand dollars.

time for a little reality check:

sure, the 2nd-generation F-body has been increasing in value recently (both as they age and as older, more desireable cars become less available) – but a mint 1977 Camaro Z28 is only “worth” around $16k or so. this movie car is neither a Z28 or mint – with a battered and patched body shell, grungy engine bay, mismatched wheels, and riveted-on hood scoop, this is much more a fixer-upper. it might be worth the four grand the Witwickys (father and son) paid for it in the film. might.

so, for thirty large, the buyer will get an old clunker of a Camaro that they can’t fix – because it would destroy the car’s “value.” that’s assuming the bidding doesn’t keep going higher in the next three days – which is very unlikely.

there is one good thing, however – proceeds from this auction (as well as several of the other Transformers movie prop auctions on eBay) will be donated to the Fisher House Foundation, a nonprofit organization that helps military families stay near their soldiers while those soldiers are hospitalized in locations around the world.

so good luck to all the bidders!
