so i get a lot of my news from the BBC,

and there appears to be quite a (justifiable) furor in Britain right now over honour killings.

a very disturbing practice that is (apparently) common in non-Western culture, it has become somewhat widespread in Western countries, imported by non-assimilated immigrants.

what bothers me most about the commentary i’ve heard is the wishy-washy nature of the tone. “oh no! what are we going to do?” seems to be the tone of the day.

unlike some commentators, i don’t think that honour killings are being encouraged by radical Islamists. these commentators cast the question in a religious “us vs. them” light, just as they cast the “War on Terror.” it’s not a religious issue (just as the “War on Terror” shouldn’t be a religious issue). it’s a cultural one (which is what the “War on Terror” should be as well, i think). i do think the mindset fostered by radical Islamists is probably more conducive to this type of act. but that doesn’t mean the wingnut mullahs are pushing people into it.

so let’s not blame the Islamic faith for this, folks. let’s blame the reprehensible scumbags who bring their medieval morality into our culture.

quote of the day:

“You say that it is your custom to burn widows. Very well. We also have a custom: when men burn a woman alive, we tie a rope around their necks and we hang them. Build your funeral pyre; beside it, my carpenters will build a gallows. You may follow your custom. And then we will follow ours.” – General Sir Charles James Napier, GCB
