unexpected bonus today…

so i was headed over to the Tanger Outlet shops in North Charleston today (Saturday) to see if i could find some new shoes (ended up with a pair of Chuck Taylor slips) and noticed some old fire engines and lots of folks milling around near one end of the parking lot. turns out (seems everyone knew about this but me) that American LaFrance has opened a firefighting museum near the outlets.

i’ve never fought a fire (except in training), but i’ve got loads of respect for firefighters. it’s hard, dangerous work, and no amount of thanks can repay the sacrifices many have made.

so i stopped in to check the place out. i must say, it’s a really great place. lots of hands-on stuff for the kids, and some beautiful engines going back to the 19th century. only quibble is the lack of signage on some displays. admittance will only be $6 for 13 years old and up, and it’s a great deal, i think. go take a look, folks.

quote of the day:

“If Prometheus was worthy of the wrath of heaven for kindling the first fire upon earth, how ought all the gods honor the men who make it their professional business to put it out?” – John Godfrey Saxe
