so i went to the Scottish Games this weekend…

the 2006 Charleston Scottish Games and Highland Gathering, to be more specific.

great fun. there is nothing that compares to the “rattaplan-rattaplan” of the drums, followed by the unearthly skirling of the pipes ass the massed bands take the field. the free whisky, courtesy of the fine fellows from the Isle of Jura distillery, was no inducement at all, i assure you.

though i’m sure that some of you feel that it would take free whisky to make pipes bearable.

i however, am rather fond of bagpipe music. so the plethora of fine bands was a great treat. comes of the Scots heritage, i guess. as i can’t think of anyone who didn’t have Gaelic roots who liked pipe music. poor souls.

i really don’t like the arrangement of the field at Boone Hall, though. it’s arranged with the clan tents around the athletic field, which makes a good view of the athletic events nigh impossible. hopefully they’ll re-arrange the setup at some future time.

went with some of the folks from the Charleston British Car Club. though i’m no longer a member, i still know a lot of those folks, and work in a British garage. it’s always fun hanging out with those guys and gals.

there were some nice cars out Saturday…

and the final reason i went to the Games was for the general scenery:

nothing more beautiful than the beauty of nature, i think.

quote of the day:

“I understand the inventor of the bagpipes was inspired when he saw a man carrying an indignant, asthmatic pig under his arm. Unfortunately, the man-made sound never equalled the purity of the sound achieved by the pig.” – Alfred Hitchcock
