I do all those things too—turn off lights, ride my bike when I can, pick up trash. I don’t tart it up as a “cause” or an “ism” though. I do it out of a combination of self-interest and normal civilized cleanliness.

I’m all for reducing our dependency on foreign petroleum by reducing dependency on all petroleum in general, and pollution is real, but man-made global warming is not.

Republicans are fine with fuel efficiency and a clean environment. We just don’t think that anyone needs to throw government money at it, or concoct bullshit to levy new taxes around like manmade global warming. Nor should we throw government money AGAINST it, like we did with GM and Chrysler for the sole purpose of preserving the jobs of the overpaid labor union DNC donors.

Hey JJ! I can’t find your email address on your blog, so I’m just going to ask my question here on your car post.

Where do you recommend I go for an oil change or work on a Land Rover other than Baker? I’m sure there’s a garage somewhere that doesn’t charge out the wazoo. Or is this something you can do? Thanks!

Will this affect your ability to work on your car(s)? Has the mac been retired? The ability to do both of those things would indicate a successful recovery. I hope you recover soon……….

Damn, that sucks. I severed my ulnar nerve several years ago in what would also be described as a freakish accident. The first set of pain meds they gave me–Mepergan Fortis–was aswesome. But then they bumped it down to hydrocodone. All of the haze with none of the levitation and none of the everything-is-hilarious. I see how people get addicted to that stuff. I certainly would have if they offered refills.

I had to do PT for several weeks afterward. The pain eventually left, but I still have numbness over a large surface of my dominant hand. Luckily it was a sensor nerve and not a motor nerve.

VW has been selling 49mpg diesel Golfs, Beetles and Jettas in the US for at least seven or eight years, with the punier 1.9 liter engines modified to handle our crappy diesel, soon to be less crappy. Diesel VWs are fine. apart from VW’s famously ridiculous maintenance costs. (By the way JJ, welcome to the club. Diesel and ethanol are the best long-term fuels for the US (and maybe CNG) so I expect that we will ultimately migrate towards them in the next ten years. Oil will be back up to $140 a barrel much sooner than we think.
